A computer enthusiast who managed to get his hands on one of AMD's upcoming Llano desktop accelerated processing units (APUs) just broke the 3DMark 06, Vantage and 11 world records for integrated graphics.

The platform used for this task included a Gigabyte A75M-UD2H motherboard, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and the AMD A8-3850 APU.

This is the fastest Llano chip to be released by the Sunnyvale-based company and packs four processing cores clocked at 2.9GHz, 4MB of Level 2 cache, a dual-channel DDR3-1866 memory controller and a Radeon HD 6550D graphics unit with 400 shader processors clocked at 600MHz.

The chip was bechmarked both at its default frequency and overclocked at 3.77GHz (1.520V), while the memory was pushed to 2320MHz.

At the latter frequencies, the A8-3850 APU was able to achieve 6160 points in 3DMark Vantage and 10,492 points in 3D Mark 06, making it the fastest integrated solution in the world.

In the latest edition of the 3DMark application, the AMD accelerated processing unit scored 1591 points.

The previous 3Dmark Vantage world record for integrated graphics was held by an Intel Core i7 2600K processor that was overclocked to 5GHz and used an MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) motherboard.

Its integrated graphics core was also overclocked to 2,133MHz in order to attain 3988 marks.

Outside of the on-die graphics core, Llano chips also feature an integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory controller and a PCI Express controller.

Computer manufacturers can choose to pair the APUs with AMD A70 or A75 chipsets, and both of these offer similar features, except for native USB 3.0 support which is only found in the A75 FCH.

So far, AMD hasn't revealed the release date of the desktop Llano APUs, but their mobile counterparts are expected to be officially launched in less than 24 hours. (via WCCTech)
