AMD has been collaborating with ALT Software, a supplier of advanced 2D and 3D graphics, on a standard-based parallel processing API. This device is meant as an alternative to custom programming and enables performance improvements for embedded computing systems by leveraging the capabilities of the graphics processing unit (GPU). The ATI Radeon E4690 Mobile PCI Express module (MXM) can deliver a three times better 3D performance with low CPU utilization.

The MXM has 512MB of on-board GDDR3 memory, 320 shader processors and adjustable system clocks for meeting power and performance requirements. The product is designed with the ATI PowerPlay intelligent power-management technology in order to enable a maximum performance and optimum power consumption per Watt. Furthermore, it supports both DirectX 10.1 and the AMD Unified Video Decoder 2 (UVD 2).

The ATI Radeon E4690 even boasts the ATI Stream technology, which can replace hardware components such as FPGAs and DSPs, reducing power, system size and overall costs. Outputs include dual independent display controllers, the DisplayPort, single and dual link integrated LVDS, analogue ouputs and even single and dual-link DVI/TMDS/HDMI.

“As the graphics requirements for embedded systems continue to increase, AMD has armed the ATI Radeon E4690 MXM with features that are important to our customers and done so within an industry-standard specification that helps simplify design, development and market delivery,” Richard Jaenicke, director of Embedded Discrete Graphics for AMD, said.

“Based on the successful ATI Radeon E4690 GPU, the ready-made ATI Radeon E4690 MXM solution provides the graphics performance, energy efficiency and reliability customers need. This, coupled with the module’s five year product life cycle, makes the ATI Radeon E4690 the easy answer for system designers looking to gain competitive advantage in the marketplace.”

“The ATI Radeon E4690 MXM module is an ideal solution for our aerospace and defense customers,” Dan Joncas, VP Sales ALT Software, added. “Its parallel processing capabilities open up a whole new range of applications including video surveillance, radar processing, target acquisition and synthetic vision. This module is ideal for manufacturers of embedded systems that require high-performance computing and advanced graphics.”

The product was introduced at the DIGITIMES Tech Forum (DFT) 2010. The price has not been mentioned as of yet, but full information on it may be found here.
