The E1-2500 processor lands inside the ThinkPad Edge E145 notebook

Lenovo managed to snatch the leading position on the PC market, and while analysts don't expect HP to take it lying down, Lenovo isn't about to slide back to second place without a fight.

And if it takes launching products based on all possible hardware combinations, the company will definitely do just that.

Case in point, despite the general propensity for Intel-based systems, Lenovo has created a notebook powered by a relatively little used AMD accelerated processing unit.

Then again, saying that the company has introduced a new notebook PC might be stretching things. After all, the ThinkPad Edge E145 isn't exactly a new arrival.

What is really new is that there is now a version equipped with an AMD Kabini accelerated processing unit, specifically the E1-2500.

AMD E1-2500 is a dual-core processor with a CPU clock frequency of 1.4 GHz and an integrated Radeon HD 8240 graphics adapter with 128 Stream processors and a 400 MHz frequency of its own.

Not exactly a very powerful platform, but better than others we've seen, and the GPU definitely surpasses Intel's alternatives.

Anyway, the reason Lenovo didn't bother with some sort of super APU, like the A-Series, is simple: the ThinkPad Edge E145 was never supposed to be all that mighty.

After all, it measures just 11.6 inches in screen diagonal and has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels (HD). No point in including a strong APU and GPU when the LCD can't even display Full HD images.

That said, the ThinkPad Edge E145 does have 4 GB of DDr3 RAM (random access memory), as well as an HDD (hard disk drive) of 500 GB and wireless support (WiFi 802.11n and Bluetooth 4.0). Needless to say, USB 3.0 is available as well (a pair of ports are present on the sides).

Sadly, we don't really know what the price will be. Most likely it will hover around $500 / €500, or a bit below that. Shipments will begin in two weeks or so.
