Cloud gaming is a very interesting concept and for a very long time it was thought to be impossible to implement in real life. CiiNOW is a cloud gaming company that was started with initial funding from Lucent and Nvidia.

AMD is jumping on the cloud gaming bandwagon with its own investment in CiiNOW, but we believe it’s important for our readers to know what cloud gaming really is in CiiNOW’s approach.

The company offers proprietary hardware and software that will make a server farm to be able to run games on multiple virtualized systems and then stream only the video signal over the network to the gamer’s display.

CiiNOW claims that an average bandwidth of about 4 to 6 Mb/s is needed to stream 720p video signal to the gamer’s device while only 0.1 Mb/s is needed for game interaction and control traffic.

This pretty much excludes high-quality 3D settings or high resolution as a 1920 by 1080 signal would require considerably more bandwidth.

Even so, there is a market for such services and AMD doesn’t want to be left behind.
