Today AMD introduced a new generation of professional graphics cards, the AMD FirePro V5900 and the AMD FirePro V7900, which come with support for the company's Eyefinity and GeometryBoost technologies.

Both graphics cards occupy only a single slot inside the system and AMD states they can double the performance of competitive offerings in select professional market applications.

Just as its name implies, the FirePro V7900 is the more advanced solution of the two as it features 1280 stream processors and a 256-bit memory bus that is connected to 2GB of GDDR5 video buffer in order to provide a theoretical bandwidth of 160GB/s.

The V7900 also comes equipped with four DisplayPort connectors, which can drive up to four monitors simultaneously, and includes the ability to support framelock and genlock via the AMD FirePro S400 synchronization module as well as 3D stereo with the included expansion bracket.

Its smaller brother, the FirePro V5900 also features a 256-bit wide memory interface and 2GB of GDDR5 video buffer, but, this time, the bandwidth available is limited at 64GB/s, while the stream processors count has been reduced to 512.

The V5900 can support up to three monitors in the Eyefinity mode, which can be connected to the two DisplayPort and one dual-link DVI video outputs available. The card's TDP is rated at 75W, while the FirePro V7900 has a TDP of 150W.

Both cards feature support for AMD's GeometryBoost technology which can process two primitives per clock cycle.

“Today AMD FirePro, the industry's fastest growing line of professional graphics cards, gets even better with the introduction of the AMD FirePro V5900 and AMD FirePro V7900,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager, AMD.

“From generation to generation of graphics performance, this success stems from our unwavering focus on the needs of the professional with a complete range of professional graphics solutions.

“AMD provides superior application performance matched with the workflow and productivity advantages of AMD Eyefinity technology -- this ultimately is the measure that matters to professionals today,” concluded the company's rep.

The two graphics cards should be available right now from various professional graphics retailers and pricing has been set at $599 for the AMD FirePro V5900, while the AMD FirePro V7900 retails for $999.
