Back in mid-February we reported the departure of Eric Demers from his position at Advanced Micro Devices and now we get to write about the new post he will fill.

Eric Demers leaving AMD was not something we expected to see, but the corporate vice president and chief technology officer (CTO) surrendered his post by his own initiative.

Now, it is revealed that the man has ended up in a new high-ranking position.

Qualcomm is the company that secured his services, hoping he will be able to create a new and mighty graphics chip.

The company also expects that his experience with the PC market will help in planning new marketing strategies.

NVIDIA and Imagination Technologies are the main competitors of Qualcomm on the mobile GPU front.

So far, the company has managed to do mostly well against them, thanks to the Adreno graphics team that originated with AMD's / ATI's Imageon business. Qualcomm bought the division in January 2009.

Demers will no doubt take over leadership of that group, but we'll have to wait for the official press release before we can be sure of anything.
