Sunnyvale, California-based Advanced Micro Devices has just announced that its high-performance FireStream 9250 computer graphics accelerator has just been qualified for HP's Accelerator Program, which will consequently make it part of the HP ProLiant DL385 G5p and DL160 G6 servers systems. According to the world's second largest chip maker, its computing solution will allow HP customers to take advantage of the massive parallel processing power and double-precision floating point of the company's high-end FireStream product.

“AMD is committed to driving widespread adoption of GPU technology for accelerated computing to improve application speed and efficiency for end users,” Patricia Harrell, director of Stream Computing, AMD, said. “By working closely with our technology partners, we feel we are making large strides in delivering solutions that take advantage of increasingly important GPU technology for general purpose applications that help solve businesses’ most complex computing problems.”

Originally launched one year ago, in June 2008, the FireStream 9250 was the first stream processor to ever break the 1-Teraflop barrier, giving customers a boost of performance when dealing with critical algorithms in scientific, financial and engineering workloads. The GPU requires 120 watts of power and features 1GB of GDDR3 memory, while its compact size makes it an ideal choice for use in 1U server systems.

“Customers in the financial services, security, as well as scientific research industries leverage hardware accelerators to help maximize application performance and lower total cost of ownership,” Jim Ganthier, vice president of marketing, Industry Standard Servers, HP, added. “The AMD FireStream 9250 compute accelerator optimizes the performance of HP ProLiant servers to help improve application efficiency and drive engineering advancements in these compute-intensive environments.”

HP customers that will make use of the system builder's ProLiant line of server systems will now be able to take advantage of the high-performance capabilities of the FireStream 9250 GPU.
