Made for overclockers, it is designed on the Vishera silicon

AMD is working on something that will really flummox people who are used to seeing energy efficiency being lauded above most everything else.

That's because the new high-end 8-core central processing unit made by AMD, called FX-9000, has a TDP (thermal design power) of 220W.

Then again, overclockers aren't likely to flounder because of the power needs that much.

The FX-9000 has a base clock speed of 4.8 GHz and a Turbo Core frequency of 5 GHz. Quite the prowess. I can only wonder what heights overclockers will push it towards.

In addition to the FX-9000, AMD is preparing the FX-8770, whose specifications haven't been revealed.

Availability is scheduled for June 11 or June 13, so that's when the rest of the details are bound to come out. Maybe a day or two earlier if online stores jump the gun.
