Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) rushed to cut all its previously released processors prices after Intel announced it will soon retail its latest and most powerful processor line-up Core 2 Duo. Furthermore, AMD has slashed the prices in the same day in which its challenger launched the so rumored products.
It is the first time after a long time that AMD decides to cut prices, even for its top of the line processors, without rolling out a new series of products that would replace the others and compete with Intels high-end CPUs.
But now AMD decided to cut the costs even for its almost dead Athlon 64 X2 series - 4800+, 4400+ and 4000+ for Socket AM2 and Socket 939. Because the company didnt previously announce anything about a future lower cost regarding its Athlon 64 X2 line-ups, the retailers kept them on the shelves with the same pricing.
Nevertheless a new distributor price sheet reveals new distributor pricing for the remaining 2x1MB Athlon 64 X2 processors. Between July 24th, 2006 and August 27th, 2006 distributors are expected to drop prices on Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 4400+ Socket AM2 and 939 products to $266 and $224 respectively. Athlon 64 X2 models 4000+ will drop to $173 in the same time frame. The price cuts will be the last for the respective models as AMD has already sent out an end-of-life regarding Athlon 64 X2 models 4800+, 4400+ and 4000+, informed Daily Tech.
Previously, the manufacturer slashed the prices for its entry-level products, including Sempron and mobile Turion 64 and Mobile Sempron processors but also for its single-core Athlon 64 and dual-core Athlon 64 X2 by up to 61%.
AMD Athlon 64 3800+ and 3500+ now cost $112 and $91, down from $290 and $189, as the dual-core chips costs are now 50% lower than previously - Athlon 64 X2 3800+ for $152 and Athlon 64 X2 5000+ for $301.
