Advanced Micro Devices and AVG Technologies have just announced that the two companies have entered into an agreement to deliver a free premium six-month license of AVG Anti-Virus to all customers who purchase an AMD boxed processor, also known as Processor-in-a-Box or PIB.

The two companies are joined in their partnership by Digital Delivery Networks, Inc. (DDNi), a PC ecosystem company that will help the two include a mini-CD preloaded with the AVG Anti-Virus software in every PIB sold.

The pre-paid version of AVG Anti-Virus will immediately launch when the user installs the mini-CD and users can renew their license at a discounted price once the initial six months have passed.

A one-year one-seat license for AVG Anti-Virus 2011 starts at $34.99 and a two-year, one-seat license starts at $51.99.

“The new year signifies a fresh start not only for consumers, but also their PCs within their home network.

“In fact, consumers often take this window of opportunity to upgrade multiple devices and boost their machines' performance for the year ahead,” said Rocco Donnino, senior vice president of Global Strategic Alliances, AVG Technologies.

“However, the safety of their digital memories remains as important-as-ever, which is why this collaboration continues to support AVG's strategy of secure interconnectivity within our users' home network,” continued the company's rep.

The offer is only valid for users who purchase such a processor from English speaking countries and no details regarding the length of the promotion have been disclosed.

At the end of January, an Intel official announced that the company was developing a hardware-based anti-virus that will be included in some of their feature products.

According to the same official, the technology could be ready by the end of the year, so this could be AMD's way of fighting back at Intel.
