We've been waiting for quite a long time now for the most important names in the portable computing market to finally tackle in a serious manner the tablet segment, and it seems that this is exactly what Acer's doing right now, since the notebook manufacturer has just outed, at a global event held in New York, quite a few interesting novelties targeting specifically this segment.

So, beside two Android tablets and one new smartphone (you can read here more on this topic), Acer also outed a 10.1-inch Windows 7 tablet, that, much to everyone's surprise, employs AMD hardware.

Unfortunately, the company has not provided any specific information regarding the AMD platform powering their new tablet, but since some sources on the Internet claim that the device will also sport a discrete graphics chip, we're pretty sure that we're not talking about Fusion here.

In fact, Acer's not provided any details on much of the tablet's hardware, such important pieces of information such as the storage space, memory and even screen resolution missing completely.

One interesting detail worth mentioning (the Acer DID actually provide) is the fact that we're talking about a convertible tablet (of sorts), since the device will be accompanied by a keyboard docking unit, enabling users to instantly turn it into a netbook, should the touchscreen display prove to be not effective enough for their needs.

Also, it seems that the future tablet will be equipped with two 1.3-megapixel camera modules (front and rear-facing), that will enable not only good-quality image and video recording, but also video chatting and conferencing (making this thing a good solution for business users as well).

Plus, it will also sport both 3G and Wi-Fi modules for easy and fast connectivity to the Internet.

Last, but certainly not least, it should be fairly easy to carry around, being just around 15 mm thick and weighing less than 1kg.

Unfortunately, it will be quite some time before Acer's 10.1-inch Windows 7 – running Tablet makes it to the market, the estimated date of arrival being set for February 2011.
