AMD 65nm CPUs Are on the Market

I don't know how they do it, but AMD's news always comes in pairs. And it's the good cop/bad cop scenario that works best when describing AMD's latest releases. Let's take the launch of 65nm CPUs as an example. After more than a year from INTEL's mass move to 65nm, AMD finally
launched its 65nm line. One year too late, yet not a bad move.

65nm CPUs consume less power and perform the same as 90nm parts. They produce a lot less heat (preliminary tests regarding AMD's 65nm parts have shown a 20 Celsius degrees drop when compared to 90nm CPUs). Next, you have the fact that 65nm processors have higher overclocking capabilities than their elder brothers.

65nm parts coming from AMD are on their second week of shipping but they are still missing from the market. So this might prove a good read after all, especially for those of you who want these CPUs. Since they are only said to hit the large retailers by the beginning of 2007, the search for the 65nm AMD CPU is almost futile. Almost.

Actually, chances of buying a genuine 65nm part are pretty low but don't hurry back home yet. The new CPUs have already been shipped to AMD partners such as HP and Dell. And I guess that the only real chance of getting your hands on one of these CPUs lies with the OEMs. I know you don't like them but they are the one that have what you need.

One quick thought must be added here. I was expecting for the 65nm parts to come out, not because of their lower power consumption. I for one hoped that they would have an overclocking potential at least equal to Core 2 Duos. Unfortunately, early pretesting has shown that most CPUs go as high as 3.1-3.2GHz on air. And while that's higher than the limit of 90nm parts, it's still fairly low when compared to the INTEL CPUs.
