AMD has just announced that its storage systems product line continues to face strong demands on the market. The 20 storage systems that bear AMD's brand are built on the company's Direct Connect
Architecture. The latest addition to the series is the Sun Microsystems StorageTek™ 5800 "Honeycomb" system.

The storage platforms are available worldwide (except for Iran and Irak, who are under the US trade restrictions) from major hardware vendors such as Sun, NetApp, HP and Capricorn Technology.

"Storage plays a critical role in the datacenter," said Pat Patla, director, Server and Workstation division at AMD. "The same benefits that the AMD Opteron processor brings to a high-end 4P enterprise server or a single socket pedestal system are critical to the storage environment - extreme reliability, high performance, and energy efficiency. The storage market is also recognizing the data center's move toward virtualization benefits and AMD technology is helping deliver that efficiency and cost savings to end customers."

The Direct Connect Architecture and the proprietary HyperTransport technology allows AMD products to deliver increased data rates, which is one of the most important technological aspects in the server / storage business. According to NetApp, AMD Opteron processors benchmarks have shown a 100 percent performance increase over the previous AMD technologies. Due to their increased performance capabilities, the Opteron servers have become the best pick for small, medium and large businesses.

"NetApp features a number of premier products that incorporate the unique features of AMD Opteron processors," said Patrick Rogers, VP of Solutions Marketing, at NetApp. "Our customers experience a dramatic performance advantage with AMD technology and NetApp's range of specialized storage systems and software. A primary strategy for NetApp is the ability to offer Fibre Channel and IP (iSCSI and NFS) SANs on a unified storage platform. This strategy and our leading-edge virtualization offerings are enhanced by the scalability and technological advantages of the AMD Opteron processor and HyperTransport technology."
