Even sooner than initially rumored

Last week, when we brought you news of AMD's upcoming R700 graphics card, we also told you it was going to become available in August. The card, to be sold under the dubbing of Radeon HD 4870 X2, is expected to come in two variants, one of which is said to provide 2GB of GDDR5 memory. According to recent reports, it appears that this exact card is about to be announced by AMD even sooner than anyone might have thought.

In fact, by this time next week, we should already have something to talk about. Per the GPU Cafe, AMD is planning to rush the release of its new graphics card, which is now expected to drop on July 14. That's four days from now, next Monday, to be more exact.

The reasons behind this decision are not yet certain but, if the rumors are true, by the end of next week, we should know whether AMD's upcoming flagship model stands any chances of stealing the performance crown from NVIDIA - all the more so since, according to ATI's Vice President, the company's new graphics card has turned quite impressive results during internal testing.

No further details regarding the card's estimated price tag have been made public but, most likely, we should be searching for the card in stores sometime between the end of July and the beginning of August. In fact, rumor has it that some people have already been lucky enough to get their hands on one of these cards, but the sources claiming this are not genuinely trustworthy.

If you still don't know what to expect from AMD's new card, here are some of the ongoing rumors: it is expected to allow a better performance than NVIDIA's GTX 280, and provide a whooping 2GB of GDDR5 memory. There is also talk of a 1GB version, but not all of ATI's partners are said to be offering it. Both versions of the card are built using two GPUs on a single PCB.
