Advanced Micro Devices is just about ready to announce the official launch of their next generation of chipsets aimed at motherboards equipped with either the AM2 or the AM2+ sockets that will be compatible with both the current generation of single and dual core central processing units as well as with the Phenom class of processors that are expected to hit the market a little bit later.

According to the news site fudzilla, the final revisions of the RD780 and RD790 high end mainboard chipsets from AMD are already prepared and the manufacturing company will start shipping them in quantity as soon as the motherboard producers finish their products' designs.

The higher end chipset of the two, the RD790, will bring the PCI Express 2.0 standard to the AMD platform while supporting four such slots for each mainboard that is based on it, so users looking for multi graphics cards setups will have a field day. At the same time, a new line of AMD compatible mainboard chipsets will arrive from Nvidia and they will hit the general consumer market under the nForce 780a and 750a designations, while presenting a number of enhancements of the southbridge chips.

Among the mainboard manufacturing companies that announced products based on the upcoming AMD RD 780 and RD 790 chipsets, there is MSI and this producer announced that its mainboard based on the RD 790 high end chip will be named K9A2 Platinum, while the motherboard centered around the RD780 chip will be commercially available under the K8A3 CF-F designation.

The CF part of the motherboard's name is linked to the fact that it will offer integrated support for CrossFire technology and the high end Platinum will be equipped with as many as four PCI Express slots. As the launch date for the Phenom class of AMD processors is coming closer, both of the MSI produced mainboards will offer native support for that generation of central processing units. Apart from the AMD chipsets, MSI also will soon launch a line of AMD compatible boards for the upcoming Phenoms that are based on Nvidia nForce chips, which are too expected to be launched in November.
