Mainstream processors are getting really cheap

The holiday season is approaching and Advanced Micro Devices ? the second largest central processing units manufacturing company ? just announced a number of its partners that, starting with the 8th of October, a new price reduction will come in effect in order to better position the company on the mainstream market segment. Affected by this new price slashing are all mainstream AMD manufactured dual core processing units, such as the Athlon 64 X2 line of products.

''As we begin a new quarter and prepare for the busiest time of the year, selected AMD dual-core desktop processors will have a reduction in suggested prices effective next Monday, October 8. This will be a great opportunity to upgrade customers to dual-core, as the AMD Athlon X2 5000+, 5200+, 5600+, 6000+ and 6400+ processors all will feature new pricing'', Advanced Micro Devices said in a statement sent out to its retail partners, first published by AMDZone and then by the news site xbitlabs.

The new pricing scheme for AMD's Athlon 64 X2 dual core processing units was not yet revealed but when considering the fact that the most expensive CPU from Advanced Micro Devices is now priced at $251, it looks like the price reductions are aimed more as a marketing move in order to attract the attention of the computer systems integrating companies.

On the other hand, the central processing unit manufacturing company may wish to price its dual core range of products on a par with the price tags that can be found on AM2 compatible mainboards. This price reduction campaign is aimed at what is now AMD's mainstream product offering, as most of the power users and computer enthusiasts may very well wait a little more and jump on the Phenom class of processors that are expected to hit the market at the end of 2007 or early 2008.
