14 DAY TRIAL // Unlike an MTV awards gala, regardless of whether it celebrates accomplishments in film or music, the American Music Awards is usually a “tame” show. ABC, which produces and airs it live, aims to offer a show that is entertaining and suitable for most categories of age, so that naturally implies restrictions of the kind MTV wouldn’t even dream of suggesting, let alone enforce.
It you think back at the 2009 edition of the AMAs and how much controversy Adam Lambert managed to create by simply grabbing a dancer’s backside and dancing suggestively with her, only to round off the number by planting a kiss on the lips of a male backup singer, you get an idea of what ABC deems OK to air and what not.
American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez and Australian rapper Iggy Azalea have been confirmed to perform at the gala, which takes place this Sunday night. TMZ says that they will do “Booty,” their most recent release, which came with a video so hot it’s impossible to embed it here.
Suffice it to say that it lives up to its name, which has made it very popular: right now, it has over 72.6 million views on YouTube. Both artists are famous for their generous backsides, and they made sure fans from all over the world got a very good look at them in the video.
According to the report, ABC bosses are concerned that the same will happen on Sunday at the AMAs. JLo and Iggy have duly been warned to tone down their performance, which shouldn’t include any rubbing or too good a view of the talents’ derrieres. In other words, they should sanitize the hell out of it.
There is a few-second delay to the live broadcast, but in the case of something really bad happening on stage, it’s not enough time to cut it all out from the transmission. ABC is hoping JLo and Iggy can listen to reason and will respect the list of Don’ts they’ve already been presented with.
