For the first time ever in the history of ABC’s American Music Awards, an Icon Award was given last night, during the 2013 edition of the gala, which was held live at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Rihanna was the recipient of such great honor.

The video above includes her performance from before the acceptance speech, of “Diamonds,”as well as the speech. Comedian Bill Maher introduced Rihanna to the stage and personally congratulated her on the honor, but his mentor / record boss Jay Z also made an appearance via a pre-recorded message.

However, the most emotional moment came when Monica Fenty, Rihanna’s mother, stepped on stage to present her with the Icon Award. She was obviously nervous but also very proud.

Rihanna thanked her entire team, from her record people to her stylists and collaborators, but also her mother for allowing her to try for a career in music when she was just 15 and her fans, who have supported her from the get-go.

“If you know me then you know I love you. I am only as good as my team,” Rihanna said in the end of her speech, realizing that she wouldn’t have the time to name everyone who deserved to be named.
