If Take That and Westlife can do it separately, other boy bands do comebacks better together. Proving that strength is in numbers, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys put in their first joint appearance at the 2010 American Music Awards.

As they’re preparing for their joint tour and amidst speculation that they might even head into the studio to record a track under the NKOTBSB moniker, the nine pop stars close the AMAs in style.

It was a genuine blast from the past, as MTV News also reports, but the “boys” managed to make it happen while also proving that, though older than Bieber or other popular pop acts of today, they still have what it takes to rock fans’ worlds.

For the 5.50-minute set, the 9 chose tracks that all members in the audience, from fans to A-listers easily identified: tracks that literally made pop history back in the day when they still were the kings of the charts.

“Like any good boy-band performance, there were pyrotechnics and sweet dance moves,” MTV notes. Indeed, there was a lot of dancing and mixing it up, which probably made things a bit confusing for someone not familiar with the boys.

“The pop supergroup started with a mash-up of the BSB hit ‘Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)’ and the NKOTB classic ‘Hangin’ Tough.’ Soon the guys slowed it down for Backstreet’s ‘I Want It That Way’ and then kicked it old school for the New Kids’ ‘Step by Step’,” MTV further writes.

“All nine guys took a dance break before they segued into ‘The Right Stuff,’ complete with the New Kids’ infamous shuffle dance from the video,” the e-zine notes.

“The spotlight once again fell on a BSB tune before they capped it off with ‘Larger Than Life,’ complete with an ‘NKOTBSB’ chant. Confetti fell from the sky as the guys closed out the show,” MTV adds.

Judging by the reaction of those in the audience, those who believe or dare say the NKOTBSB idea is a bad one should reconsider: everybody was dancing and singing along.
