iPhone and iPod touch users around the world are now able to enjoy an updated version of one of the major instant messaging clients for their devices, AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). The new 3.0.13.0 version doesn't come only as a simple update, it seems, but it is also meant to offer more functionality to iPhone and iPod touch users, including support for Push Notification on the iPhone OS 3.0.

The AOL Instant Messenger, as many of you might already know, was expected to come to the App Store with Push Notification, as Apple was reported for a few weeks now to work on the new features. The addition of the new functionality will allow customers to use the service without having it opened at all times, as the messages are sent to the device. According to some of those that already tried out the beta version of AIM, the service works just fine, which means that iPhone users really have a reason to rejoice.

Those who would like to try the new version should know that the Push notifications will be set when the application is run for the first time. Moreover, it seems that users will also be able to set for the notifications to be brief (announcing on the new IM), to include the sender's name, or to be either normal sized or full sized. The notifications can be set to appear as a pop-up message, a sound, or a few other combinations.

Other features of the application include continuous connectivity via Wi-Fi, EDGE, or 3G networks (iPod touch supports only Wi-Fi), even at times when AIM is not running, when users can set to receive notifications through Push Notification or via SMS. At the same time, they can connect to anyone on the AIM network worldwide, set multiple screen names, IMs and SMS text messages (charges may apply), share locations, and others more.
