One of the possible explanations for why the incidence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has spiked over the past couple of decades is that the condition is in fact a group of disorders.

The idea belongs to experts at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). They say that ADHD may in fact contain a spectrum of conditions, similar to how cancer has multiple subtypes. As such, a single approach to treating it may not be enough.

The diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of ADHD need to be substantially improved, the team believes. The new study proposes a series of criteria for differentiating between various subtypes of attention deficit, PsychCentral reports.

“The data here highlights ways to recognize such individual variability and shows promise that we might be able to identify why any given child presents with ADHD, thus allowing for future examinations of more personalized treatments,” the group explains.
