Rascal Flatts was one of the acts performing live at this Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards 2014 in Las Vegas but, fans started to whisper right after their number, it was probably not entirely “live.”

In fact, angry fans said, leading man Gary LeVox was totally lip-synching. You can see for yourself what caused all the commotion online in the video below, of the band’s performance. It is of rather dubious quality but it should serve its purpose.

It turns out that the fans were quite right, as the band announces in a message on their Twitter account: they did lip-synch but they promise it was for the first time and with very good reason.

“After having performed several shows earlier in the week, Gary lost his voice. So, instead of canceling our commitment to do the show, we made a last minute decision to lip-sync. We've never done it before, and we're obviously not very good at it,” they say.

The funny part is that, earlier in the show at the ACMs, host Blake Shelton made a crack about how the night would be packed with live performances, inviting all those who disliked live music to go down the block for a Britney Spears show.

Looks like they didn’t have to leave the building for that.
