Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan returned as hosts for the 2014 edition of the Academy of Country Music Awards, held last night at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas. Below is their opening monolog, which was filled with jabs at pop stars.

Among them was also Britney Spears who, as you probably know, is now doing a 2-year residency in Sin City. According to Blake, her show is a must-see only if you happen to not like live music.

“If you don’t like live music, then you need to go down the block and see Britney Spears,” he laughed, right after he promised members of the audience a fun night filled with live music.

Later in the intro, he also ripped into Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus, but it’s only Britney’s fans who have taken serious issue with what he said. Before you do too, please consider the following:

Number 1: no one takes such jokes seriously. At all awards shows, the hosts are expected to roast fellow celebrities, and they usually go for someone who either is known for having a sense of humor or has gotten used to jokes on a certain topic. Like Britney and her live singing, which happens so rarely it makes headlines when it does.

Number 2: Britney Spears doesn’t sing live. She hasn’t in years. Her fans defend this by saying that she’s a performer, an entertainer and, as such, she can’t possibly do the complicated choreography and deliver a solid singing performance. So, out of all people, Britney will probably be last to take offense at someone telling the truth.

Now, enjoy the intro. Luke sure seems to have a blast, doesn’t he?
