ABC has pulled the plug on medical comedy series “Scrubs,” Zach Braff says

“Scrubs,” also described as the “zaniest” medical comedy ever to grace the small screen, will close shop at the end of this season, its ninth. Though ABC has not issued an official statement regarding this, original star Zach Braff broke the news to the fans on his Facebook page, as iVillage also informs.

When ABC picked the series for an eighth season, it did so under the pretense that it would be an “18-episode stay of execution,” as we also informed you more than a year ago. The idea was to give producers the chance to tie up all loose ends and thus allow fans the proper means to say their goodbyes, as they say. Be that as it may, Braff’s announcement that ABC has pulled the plug on the show still comes as a shock, especially for fans who’ve been with it ever since it first debuted.

“Are the doors of the Sacred Heart hospital closing forever? Yes, according to Zach Braff’s Facebook page. The Scrubs star posted a sad message to fans and FB friends on Monday, announcing the end of the comedy series. ‘Many of you have asked, so here it is,’ Zack wrote, ‘It appears that ‘New Scrubs,’ ‘Scrubs 2.0,’ ‘Scrubs with new kids,’ ‘Scrubbier,’ ‘Scrubs without JD’ is no more. It was worth a try, but alas... it didn’t work. zb’ Though, according to the show’s head honcho, Bill Lawrence, Scrubs ‘hasn’t been canceled, we’re all just assuming it’s over,’ he said Tuesday,” iVillage writes.

Other things pointing to a cancelation are to be found online as well – Twitter, to be more exact. “[T]he writers of the show are Twittering, maybe for the last time, about what seems like the end of the series. ‘We’re going to close up this Twitter shortly, and pop back on if there’s news for the future,’ they posted Thursday night, after what could have been the show’s season finale. ‘Whatever happens in the future, we’ll let you guys know. Thanks for watching & letting us have the best job in the world (after astronaut). ScrubsWriters out!’” iVillage further writes.

As also noted above, ABC was immediately unavailable for comment at the time of writing. Nevertheless, even some of the fans who kept an eye on ratings for the past months admit that the move on behalf of the network wouldn’t come as total surprise – though they’d hate it if it were true.
