Anna just as we like to remember her

I have no idea if this actually means anything for anyone anymore - but I doubt any of you have completely forgotten about the shocking death of Texan glamor model and Marilyn wannabe Anna Nicole Smith one year ago. And yes, it hurts me to say that her death has pretty much resembled her life: we can't remember the details, we glide over the finer points, significant or not, but we remember the sensationalist part, the tragedy, the mystery and the controversy. We remember Anna's death, we remember some of the most outrageous decisions she made, but everything else just fades away. Which is sad, thinking that she's only been gone for a year. And yes, one year ago, the "buxom blonde", the "tabloid darling", the "world's most famous blonde trainwreck" died.

I am not going to talk too much about her life - it was such a complicated, meandering and yet sensational affair that I feel overwhelmed just thinking about all the ups and downs in her career and personal life. I did however find one biography of the blonde socialite which I found particularly well-documented and which mentions other aspects of her life than the usual "she married a rich old guy", "she was on drugs", "her son died five days after she gave birth to her baby girl". You can have a look, and then sit back and wonder for a few minutes - maybe more, depending on how compassionate or melancholic you are by nature - and ask yourself whether Anna Nicole Smith's life had some shred of joy and meaning in it, or whether she portrays yet another pointless, out-of-control celebrity who made a string of bad decisions and ended up paying the ultimate price for them.

I think you may think I'm old-fashioned and depressing (particularly since it's Saturday and all), but I'll say it again - rest in peace, Anna Nicole Smith. Your smile and your joyful energy and love for life live on in your baby daughter. Anna made some good decisions and some very bad ones, she allowed a part of herself to be corrupted by the modern demons of greed, shallowness and exhibitionism - but part of her was always gentle, caring and loving. I think we can safely say that yes, she will be remembered, and for the moment, there's no better compliment we can pay to her.
