The technical specifications of the TransFlash format, developed by SanDisk, are to be finalized soon, and following to the adopting of the format by the SD Card Association, a new storage standard, microSD, will be established.
The famous SD (secure digital) was also developed by SanDisk, in collaboration with Toshiba and Panasonic. In other words, by establishing the new standard, other companies
will be able to adopt the technology, just like in the SD card case.
Even though the SD Card Association approval is due for the next two months, the card is already on the market as TransFlash, and its dimensions are smaller than those of both traditional cards - Secure Digital and MiniSD. The dimensions of the micro version are 15x11x1 mm., very close to a SIM card size.
The card has already been adopted by the mobile phone producers, with storage capacities of 64 and 128 MB. So far, the keenest supporter of the card is Motorola, but it's estimated that by the end of the year, at least 50 phone models will be MicroSD compatible.
TransFlash and MicroSD will be compatible with each other, and SD devices will be able to use MicroDS cards, through the aid of an adaptor.
The advantages of the memory card miniature version are obviously related to its integration in mobile phones, whose dimensions decreased dramatically lately, despite the new (especially multimedia) features addition.
MicroSD is believed to become a success, such as its predecessor, especially since the main mobile device manufacturers (Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba, NEC) adopted these solutions.
