A New Nokia Commnunicator on the Road

Every now and then, Nokia comes out with something that usually blows us away. The same happened at the S60 webcast organized by Nokia when, during a presentation slide, it gave attendees a peek at something that really was a shocker.

The “shocker” in question was a brick-like device that looked like an all-touchscreen phone that converted into a Communicator when the “pencil box” form-factor was opened. By taking a closer look at the photo, we noticed that the touchscreen would then swivel to face the keyboard, which also seemed to be a touchscreen more than a physical keyboard.

This led us to believe that this might just be a new Nokia Communicator, and Nokia just gave us a teaser, since it was presented as a concept device. Quite understandably, everyone is now anxious to see what happens next, as we’re all waiting for more information to leak from the usual “inside” sources.

In case you’re wondering what S60 is, you should know that it is a platform for mobile phones that run on Symbian OS, and one of the leading smartphone platforms in the world. Also, S60 was the first to bring full HTML browser in mobile devices, providing a desktop-like browsing experience.

The Communicators had their own Symbian-based operating system, Series 80 – this, until the E90 came on the market and brought them in line with the rest of the S60-based devices. Now, with the S60 5th Edition, it seems that Nokia will bring another stylish addition to the Communicator family.

Could all this mean that the Finnish company is preparing yet another, new smartphone, and that it was presented right after the highly anticipated launch of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic just to keep the interest in Nokia's products high? It could be, but, then again, why would Nokia do that when its position as one of the best selling mobile phone brands around the globe is already guaranteed? It's called marketing strategy, and it works – otherwise, no one would be talking about this concept phone before its official launch.
