A thousand students broke the Guinness World Record for most Mahatma Gandhi lookalikes, in the Indian town of Ahmedabad.

Indian students organized the event in tribute to Mahatma Gandhi’s life and accomplishments on the 143rd anniversary of the leader's birth, Mirror reports.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869– 30 January 1948) promoted Indian nationalism in British-ruled India, Wikipedia informs.

He introduced non-violent civil disobedience as a form of protest against civil rights of Muslims and Hindu Indians in South Africa.

After becoming leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921, he achieved Swaraj, self-governance and Indian independence from the British domination.

He fought to eradicate poverty in India, expand women's rights, stabilize Indian economy and ensure religious freedom in order to stop riots and altercations amongst different religious parties.

Before his passing, he had engaged in a diplomatic mission to stop the carnage between Muslims and Hindus, backed by the Sikhs. He was assassinated on 30 January 1948, by a Hindu nationalist. Hindu rioters believed he was offering too much support to Muslims.
