Spanish, Italian and Serbian scientists are proud to declare that they found a connection between strawberries and alcohol's negative effects that might turn out to be very useful in the treatment of stomach ulcers.

It is no secret that people who consume alcohol on a regular basis suffer a great deal after their stomach's mucous membrane is carved by alcohol molecules.

In order to test their theory, the team conducted several tests on lab rats. They added strawberry extracts to their daily diet and observed how the substance had a protective effect upon their stomach, keeping it safe from the alcohol's negative impact.

The stomach's mucous membranes of rats which ate strawberries were less affected than those of the creatures who didn't receive any fruit of this kind.

Now the scientists try to find ways to apply the same strategy to the human organism.

Researchers want to prove that, after adding strawberries to their daily menu, people will be able to fight stomach illnesses such as Gastritis, which are painful and can be easily avoided by adopting a healthy lifestyle.

They tend to think that, if the treatment showed spectacular result while applied to rats, it will have the ability to reduce the formation of stomach ulcers in the case of human beings, as well.

In the past, scientists were able to correlate Gastritis, the inflammation of the mucous membrane with an increased level of alcohol consumption.

But this is only one cause for this disease. It could also be generated by viral infections or even by some common pills prescribed by doctors, such as aspirin, or treatments against the Helicobacter pylori bacteria.

Strawberries contain fisetin, an antioxidant which proved to have beneficial effects in relation to Alzheimer's disease and to kidney failure resulting from diabetes, so improving your daily menu with these delicious fruit might not be a bad idea, after all.
