Seagate technology has announced the cutting-edge Digital Audio Video Experience (D.A.V.E) technology that will deliver 10-20GB worth of wireless storage in a device smaller and slimmer than most mobile phones.

The digital files stored on the device can be played and shared on wireless-enabled devices including mobile phones and PCs. Due to the fact that it's open source, third party applications can also be used with the platform.

"Mobile telephony is undergoing a multimedia revolution, and the DAVE mobile content platform will provide even more fuel for the growth of new music and video services over mobile networks," said Patrick King, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate's consumer electronics business unit. "Products using DAVE technology will enable digital content, whether for business or entertainment use, to be stored, moved, and connected in ways never before possible. Mobile carriers can use this technology for creating value from their investments in high-bandwidth networks, and mobile handset manufacturers have another tool for turning the multimedia phone into the center of the mobile consumer's digital life."

The technology makes storing content and upgrading mobile phones easy. The user only has to pair the new handset to the device in order to enjoy digital content on the mobile phone.

Users will also be able to store video, audiobooks or GPS data and use it all when needed on the go. The 10 GB version can store up to 2,500 songs or 21 hours of video. DAVE-based products will also enable mobile lifeblogging and other social networking applications, and allow users to record massive video and photo files that can be uploaded to social networking sites including YouTube and MySpace.

The DAVE reference design measures 3.5 x 4.7 x .47 inches and weighs as little as 2.5 ounces, so it will be in no way inconvenient to carry around. It will last for up to 10 hours of continuous media streaming and just about 14 days on standby. The DAVE storage platform should become available to mobile phone manufacturers in the second quarter of 2007.
