Seller says he obtained the watch "from a cousin who works for Apple", closes bidding as soon as he nabs a few notes

The Apple Watch hype is beginning to build up. We’ve seen the first knockoffs at CES 2015, and we won’t be surprised to see more of them crop up in the weeks leading up to the gadget’s official launch date.

What we didn’t expect was to see someone with such poor judgment as to cough up $260 (€223) for a fake version of the wrist-worn device on a claim that it came from “a cousin who works at Apple.” We’re guessing there are a lot of 8-year-olds with eBay accounts out there.

Up for auction

Owning a prototype of any given Apple product certainly wins you some bragging rights, but even the nearsighted could spot this knockoff a mile away. Yet somehow seller mattoo13 managed to squeeze a few hundreds from someone who was willing to bet on the veracity of this eBay listing. The bidding history shows a certain 0***a winning the auction with a $267 (€229) bid.

“Up for auction is an apple watch. Be the first to own the apple product before It goes on sale. The his is a prototype and not the watch that is the finished product. I obtained this watch from a cousin who works for Apple. Good luck bidding. Watch is brand new and works perfectly. Comes with charger.”

For those of you who missed this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Apple hopes to sell you its precious new gem sometimes in the following months. They’ve confirmed that the entry-level version will retail for $350 (€300). In the interim, be sure to not to overspend on marketing that sounds too good to be true.
