External storage devices are very popular these days as their price is only fractionally higher than the price tag sported by a similar capacity internal hard disk drive and apart from the price consideration, they are also offering a good deal of mobility and fast enough data transferring rates. While the mobile storage market was traditionally dominated by flash memory devices that offered a good price and speed at the expense of storage capacity, now external hard disk drives are having a field day; they come encased in protective boxes that make them quite resilient at shock, drops and all the rigors of a mobile service.

One of the most ''out of the box'' thinking companies, LaCie, is coming to meet the demands of users in need of an external storage device that can offer both a high data transferring rate and a significant capacity for an affordable price with its newest product, the Golden Disk. LaCie is now trying to differentiate its line of products from all competing devices by employing a unique liquid-like design for the protective casing of its Golden Disk.

Apart from the innovative design, the Golden Disk comes with a standard storage capacity of 500GB and inside the shiny casing there is a hard disk drive which boasts a minimum of 8MB of cache memory and a 7200 rotational speed. The connection between the host operating system and the external storage medium is done by using a single high speed USB 2.0 port, which serves as both data transferring interface and energy delivering system. Thanks to the high speed offered by the USB 2.0 interface of up to 480Mbits per second or 60MBps and the low average seek time of less than 11ms, the LaCie Golden Disk external storage device is offering a high level of performance combined with plentiful of data storage space.

As the LaCie Golden Disk uses the cross platform USB interface to connect to a host computer system, the external storage device is compatible with both x86 and Mac computers, while supporting a brad range of operating systems like Windows, Mac and Linux. The drive is also plug and play enabled and driver free, so users will only need to plug it in order to access the files stored inside it. As the Golden Disk come with a fanless design, it offers a whisper quiet operation and the bundled software suite includes back up software for both Windows and Mac.
