You remember the Cell CPU, don't you? Well, just in case, here are a few facts that you might find interesting. First let me point out that the Cell chip was developed with a budget of several billion dollars by Toshiba, Sony and IBM with a variety of applications in mind. But it seems that despite the plans that included several development directions for Cell based systems; the only product that currently uses Cell remains the PS3. Things might change in the future, especially because of Toshiba.

Yoshihide Fujii, president and chief executive officer of Toshiba's digital media network company, said on Thursday that Toshiba already has some plans that regard the Cell issue. Translated into facts, the ideas could materialize into some specially designed media centers or even something like Ati's Stream Processor. Take into account that these are only speculations so the real product could be substantially different.

The first Cell products are unlikely to come to your living rooms next year, Atsutoshi Nishida, president and CEO of Toshiba, said in an earlier interview, "But maybe in early 2008 you'll be able to see something." Maybe some of us would like to see a Cell-based device sooner than that but it seems we'll have to wait a little.

That timeframe could escalate the Sony vs. Toshiba case into a fully fledged war. Stan Glasgow, president and chief operating officer of Sony's U.S. unit, recently said that the company is working on three or four products which will enter the market in the beginning of 2008. "The first priority is the PlayStation and nothing beyond that has been decided yet," claims Mina Naito, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based Sony.
