Backgroundcheck.org

has released an interesting infographic to highlight the privacy and data security threats healthcare organizations are confronted with.

The figures show that 94% of healthcare organizations suffered at least one data breach in the past two years.

In the course of three years, around 21 million patients became the victims of medical record data breaches.

On average, 2,769 records are stolen per breach. The most worrying fact is that in many cases, electronic medical files include not only medical diagnosis and treatment information, but also social security numbers, insurance details and financial data.

When it comes to the causes of breaches, most of them occur as a result of the loss or theft of a device. Employee mistakes, third-party snafus, criminal attacks, technical problems and malicious insiders are also on the list.
