A man from West Midlands has taken home the world Guinness record for oldest wing walker at the age of 93.

Tom Lackey also set the previous record and his first contact with Guinness in this category came in 2005, when he was 85 years old.

"I have done quite a number of wing walks. I do like doing it. I like the adrenaline and I see it as a challenge but this was definitely the toughest yet," he notes for Metro.

He landed safely at the City of Derry Airport after being on the wings of a 1943 plane for one hour and 21 minutes. The aircraft hovered over the Irish Sea at 1,000 feet (304 meters).

He flew with a Boeing Stearman biplane and departed from Castle Kennedy, near Stranraer, in Scotland.

Lackey arrived in Derry at 11 a.m. and he describes the flight as thrilling and very noisy.

"I could see lots of sheep, lots of cows and little vehicles moving about like toys. It was scary at times but it's over with now and I have broken my own record.

"I have been doing it for a long time and the pilot was quite prepared to bring me down at any stage but thankfully he didn't have to," he says.

Lackey has performed about 30 walks so far and he dedicated every one of them to his late wife, who served in the Royal Air Force.

The resident of Shirley, near Solihull, first flew after his wife, Isobel, passed away. He always carries her photo with him during his stunts.

"She comes with me every time I go up in the air. I mainly think of her and what she would think of me. I do think she would have been very proud. I have been doing all these stunts to keep her memory alive. She was a wonderful person," he explains.
