A 91-year-old weightlifter from Arizona has set the new world record for bench pressing in the over 90s section, reports say.

Sy Perlis of Surprise lifted 187.2 pounds (85 kg), according to the Huffington Post. That's 52.2 pounds (23.7 kg) more than the previous record title holder.

Perlis participated in the National Push-Pull Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships in Phoenix on June 8.

The weightlifter is a former army man and World War II veteran. The Arizona resident currently works out five times per week, which is more than most people in their 20s. Last year, he has had a pacemaker put in but he is now back to his regular exercise routine.

"I would say that's pretty phenomenal," powerlifting champion Rickey Dale Crain comments.
