Only a small number of mobile phone users consume videos on their devices these days, but it seems that the amount of data they actually eat is pretty impressive, a recent report from Bytemobile shows.

According to the company, while only 9 percent of all handset owners view videos on their devices during a 24 hour time interval, the data they consume tops about 38 percent of all traffic registered during the said time frame.

The company notes that these numbers come from an analysis of data trends across more wireless networks, and that it took into consideration usage on Android, iPhone/iPad, as well as laptop data usage.

Here are some of the findings that Bytemobile shared with us recently:

- In any given 24-hour period, 9 percent of subscribers are consuming video content on their mobile devices. - That 9 percent is generating 38 percent of total data volume on the network. - 10 percent of mobile data users generate approximately 90 percent of total traffic. - Video demand on network resources is consistently high for the greater part of the day, whether from the small screen or the large screen. - 40 percent of total video data volume on wireless networks is generated by the top 3 percent of videos requested. - Consumers use quality of mobile video play as an indication of network quality. Today's already strained wireless networks are expected to be impacted by the mobile video consumption, which is currently on the rise.

Given the fact that more and more users choose devices with larger screens, such as tablet PCs, the video data volume is expected to increase even more.

Personal video communications are expected to impact network capacity starting with late 2011. The company expects for more and more data to be consumed, as carriers move to LTE and other 4G network technologies.

Bytemobile already offers various solutions to carriers interested in managing and controlling their network resources to meet the increasing demand for data consumption, such as the Smart Capacity platform.

Over 125 operators in 60 countries benefit from the capabilities of Bytemobile Smart Capacity solutions, including AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Mobile, China Telecom, KDDI, O2, Orange, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, Telecom Italia Mobile, Telefónica, TeliaSonera, or Vodafone.
