8800 Series Is Not a Big Hit

8800 cards are not selling as they should

The 8800 mania has come and gone. Those of you who bought such a card will not be interested in reading this as it doesn't concern you in any way (you won't
even read this since you're probably playing a game on your PC). But for those who are still undecided, this quick readout might prove useful.

First let's say that most of the 3rd party suppliers are complaining about the fact that the board itself is a poor competitor when it comes to sales. And this, they say, happens because of two reasons. The first is the price. You know G80 is not cheap but most of you didn't expect it to cost that much with a high-end manufacturer one (BFG) retailing at almost $700. Expect to pay up $100 more if you want water cooled card.

Yep, it's definitely not the cheapest thing to buy but it seems that this is not the only reason behind the poor sales. It's also a problem the fact that more than 50% of the cards were released from the market right before the day of launch in order to fix a faulty resistor that was responsible for some erratic behavior when in 3D mode. And that has made many potential buyers rather suspicious when thinking about buying this card. As a result, many changed their minds.

Several rumors have reported that Nvidia already samples G84 and G86 chips in order to have the boards ready by February 2007. That might fix the price problem, offering Directx10 for the masses. As for the faulty resistors, the glitch has been completely fixed. The rest is for you to decide.
