80GB PS3 Backwards Compatibility Issues Gone?

Beautiful console meets bugs

You must have heard about the PS3's compatibility issues when it comes to PS2 games, as this problem was present in the case of the latest console
units and all of Sony's next-gen devices from Europe. The new PS3 model uses software emulation, because it doesn't include the PS2 hardware in it, so the problems with the backwards compatibility were predictable. Hardcore gamers have tried running the famous Gran Turismo 4 on one of the new PS3s and encountered many bugs.

Those issues included the desynchronization of most of the players during a network gaming session and a poor playback of the intro FMV (85% of the normal performance). There were also problems with the vehicles that didn't behave like they were designed to during gameplay in some demo FMA sequences. Last, but not least the hit-title Gran Turismo 4 featured some bizarre graphical effects appearing randomly on the screen's top left corner, while the game was being played on an 80GB PS3.

So, in order to avoid such awkward situations, Sony offers us a list of compatible titles we can check out by accessing this address: http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus . We would have much rather enjoyed a patch or a real way of solving the issues instead of contemplating this problem and searching for titles that run decently.

A gamer that spends his summer job's income on a brand new PS3, in Europe will surely be frustrated by the fact that he can't play a decent PS2 classic, especially if he doesn't own Sony's previous gen gaming device. Well, at least the problem's solved, for now and maybe we'll see it disappearing in a month or two, in case Sony's no too busy advertising its Slim PSP and new titles. If my memory is correct, things were way better in the case of the PS2-PSX backwards compatibility, so we can consider this a step back for Sony.

People must remember that when creating a "next genenration" console, making it "backwards compatible" is actually really difficult if you have changed the hardware significantly. In the case fo the PS3, it's an entirely new console - not some re-hash of an old console to give it a little more kick (like the xbox360) whilst being nearly 100% fully backwards compatible. Therefore with a completely new design (hardware wise) the PS3 offers better performance than it's current competitors at the sacrifice of backwards compatibility.

If you thinkg about it, those people looking to upgrade from their PS2 to a PS3 are wasting their time and money selling their old console to put a little extra towards a new one. I still have the original PS2 (i.e. the one before they made it quieter, then silver, then smaller - mines a first generation, noisy PS2) ... and it still works great after several years of ownership and lots of playing. There's no point selling it as even a brand new slimline PS2 would only fetch about £40 on it's own in the second-hand market.

Compare this to my xbox360, which had to get sent of for repairs just after it turned 1 year old ... and recently the hard drive failed. I called up xbox suport again, bu they kept giving me the excuse of "sorry but our system is down so we can't raise a repair order at this time, please call back later" (after getting me to do a variety of tests each time to bring up the error message) - the excuse was the same for 3 attempts in a row (over a period of about a week).

My Brother has an original European 60GB PS3 and he's had NO problems with it. I have played on it a lot and found it to be very easy and fun to use. If you have a PSP it adds extra fun - I have one and my Brother added my PSP to his system. I won;t go into full detail, but if you read up on waht you can do with your PSP and PS3 - it's impressive ;) - no other console can offer that kind of connectivity (basically you can use your PSP as a remote for your PS3, but you can also stream video and songs from your PS3 to your PSP, and with a hardware addon - record digital tv and stream / download it to your PSP via an internet connection - i.e. anywhere in the world!!!)

Ok so I don't own a PS3 ... but if I don't get one for my birthday, I'm buying one as I'm 100% sure I'm not wasting my money. It may not be very backwards compatible, but it's one hell of a console with a huge array of features ;)

I myself, lost my Playstation 2 when it was stolen from my room. I bought a PS3 thinking I could play my old games. So what are people like me supposed to do? Sony seriously wants me to buy another console, one I've already paid for once, to play games I've already paid for, instead of just maintaining one of the smartest options a console manufacturer ever thought of including (Backwards Compatibility)? Even from a business standpoint, thats retarded.

With this, I have to wonder if consoles are on their way out. I bought a new HP I7 last year, and you know what, it doesnt have the slightest problem running my 15 year old copy of SimCity. If Xbox and Playstation cant at least pretend to match that sort of compatibility, well then, eventually people will get smart, and just get a computer.

Sony has permanently lost my business because of this. I will never buy another Sony or Playstation game or title because of this. I'll stick to computers thanks. I can still play most of the games I did back in the 80's on my new I7 HP. I dont have to buy an older computer to play older games. Epic fail on Sonys part. Microsofts too. Either one of them would have a huge advantage over the other they were BC. In fact, I would'nt be surprised if they got together and agreed to eliminate BC just so they could both make more money.
