A total of 80 individuals suspected of running Internet phone extortion schemes have been arrested over the weekend by Cambodian authorities. The alleged scammers are believed to have extorted money from victims in China.

The suspects, Chinese and Taiwanese nationals, will be deported over the upcoming period. An order to expel 53 of them – 12 Chinese and 41 Taiwanese – has already been signed by the acting Interior Minister Em Sam Ann, VOA reports.

Chinese and Taiwanese authorities are currently in Cambodia to handle the expulsion process.

The law enforcement operation comes in response of the complaint made by Chinese authorities, which are currently trying to disrupt several schemes operated by individuals based abroad.

This is the fifth such criminal ring dismantled by Cambodian authorities over the past years.
