Earlier this week, a couple in the US contacted the police and told officers that, while going through the candy their daughter got for this year's Halloween, they came across an odd-looking plastic bag.

After paying the couple a home visit and closely examining the suspicious bag, officers found that it contained crystal meth crushed into powder. An investigation was launched, and the police hope to soon identify the bag's previous owner.

Not the easiest case the local police has so far investigated

The peculiar incident is said to have occurred in the city of Hercules in California. Although folks in the US celebrated Halloween some time ago, on October 31, it was only a couple of days ago, on November 3, that the bag of meth was discovered.

For the time being, the identity of the couple whose 8-year-old girl was given the crystal meth remains a mystery. What is known is that, almost immediately after they found the suspicious bag on Monday, at about 8:30 in the morning, the couple contacted the police.

From the time it was discovered until the police took it into custody, the bag was handled by several people. Hence, officers expect that they will have a tough time trying to identify and locate its previous owner based on fingerprints alone.

Presently, officers don't even know if the 8-year-old girl from Hercules, California, was given the bag of crystal meth on purpose or if maybe it was all a slip of the hand. Until they sort out this puzzle, they urge that people in the community have a look at their kids' Halloween candy before letting them eat it.

“This could have been intentional or it could have been accidental and we won’t know until we speak with the person who did this,” Sgt. Ezra Tafesse said in a statement, as cited by Metro. Furthermore, “More than anything, we want to educate the public to inspect their children’s candy before giving it to them.”

Seeing how the bag contained about one-tenth of a gram of methamphetamine, police officers in the city of Hercules say that, should they eventually find its previous owner, they will be able to charge them with possession of a controlled substance.

The neighbors were just as shocked as the couple

As one would expect, people living close to the couple were quite surprised to hear about their neighbors' finding crystal meth in their 8-year-old girl's stash of Halloween candy. “I think that is sick,” a resident identified as David Pel said in a statement, as cited by RT.

The good news is that, by the looks of it, this girl was the only kid in the area that got meth instead of candy for this year's Halloween. Hopefully, the local police will soon find the person responsible for this incident.
