Sony has announced not long ago that it is working on a new handheld, which it calls the NGP at the moment, but the gaming world has long speculated about as the PlayStation Portable 2, and a survey, although one which targets a small slice of gamers, suggests that the device might be a hit in Japan.

The Japanese gaming-oriented magazine Famitsu has launched a poll targeting its readers and a whooping 76.2 percent of those who answered said that they wanted an NGP, suggesting that they might buy one on launch, with just 7.9% of them saying that they are not interested in one.

Close to 16 percent answered that they were still undecided about the new Sony made handheld.

The survey also shows that half of respondents are saying that they like how the PSP 2 looks, with almost a quarter being quite taken with the new concept while 23 percent say that the design is not very good as long as they are concerned.

Famitsu also polled gamers about the price, not yet officially announced, for the NGP, with most possible customers, 42.5 percent, saying that it should sell for less than 30,000 Yen, which is currently the equivalent of about 360 dollars, with 17% pinning their hopes on a price under 25,000 Yen.

Sony has offered quite a bit of information on the PlayStation Portable 2 when the official announcement was made, saying that the device will have two analog sticks for control, an OLED display which has multi-touch capabilities on the back and enough processing power to deliver gaming experiences that are similar to those on the PlayStation 3 in its early days.

Sony has not yet talked about the battery life, which is a crucial aspect for a handheld, and the price will probably only be announced later in the year, close to launch date.

Sony says that Japan will get the PSP 2 before the end of 2011 and that other territories will quickly follow.
