The man moved to Germany as a foreign exchange student, says he has no intention to leave the country

It's impossible to tell just by looking at him, but Togbe Ngoryifia Céphas Kosi Bansah, a 66-year-old man currently living in Germany, is actually a king in Africa.

Mind you, he isn't a king in the sense that he has a ginormous palace waiting for him in Ghana. Thus, this man is the ruler of the town of Hohoe, meaning that he only has about 200,000 subjects.

Still, this does not change the fact that, in Africa, he is not known as Togbe Ngoryifia Céphas Kosi Bansah, but as King Bansah of the Hohoe.

How does an African king end up in Germany?

The 66-year-old explains that he first visited Germany decades ago, as a foreign exchange student. He took a sudden liking to the country and its people and decided to spend the rest of his life in this corner of the world.

His life came pretty darn close to being turned topsy-turvy in 1987, when his grandfather passed away and folks in Hohoe proclaimed him their king. Oddly enough, it would appear that he was chosen because he is right handed.

As explained by Oddity Central, his older brother and his father weren't considered suitable to be kings because, as they are left handed and thus considered to be dishonest.

Life as an African king in Germany

It is understood that Togbe Ngoryifia Céphas Kosi Bansah was officially crowned king back in 1992. Contrary to what people expected, the man refused to move back to Ghana and instead remained in Germany.

What's more, the newly proclaimed King Bansah of the Hohoe got a job running a car repair garage, which the 66-year-old says he has no intention whatsoever to quit anytime soon. Mind you, he even married.

To rule his people in Africa, Togbe Ngoryifia Céphas Kosi Bansah uses Skype and telephone calls to keep tabs of whatever is happening in Hohoe, and mediate disagreements between his subjects.

Admittedly, the man does his best to visit his kingdom several times a year, but the fact of the matter is that he mostly rules his subjects from far, far away. The good news is that, at least for the time being, nobody seems to mind.

Why he might want to move back to Africa

The 66-year-old might be a king in Africa, but as it turns out, folks in Germany can't be bothered to care about his status. On the contrary, it was not too long ago that somebody broke into his home and stole four of his crowns.

“Thieves had come over the balcony on the first floor, prised the door open, smashed the cabinets and ransacked everything,” King Bansah of the Hohoe told the press in an interview. The crowns were worth about €20,000 ($25,000).

Even worse, it appears that, seeing how these crowns were several hundred years old, Togbe Ngoryifia Céphas Kosi Bansah can't really have them replaced in the blink of an eye.
