Rumors coming from AMD's Chinese channels say that 65nm CPUs (Athlon 64 X2 400 , 4400 , 4800 and 5000 ) are officially coming out on 5 Dec. While this
was not commented by AMD officials, several channels have confirmed the availability of 65nm parts by the end of December.

It seems that this time AMD is using 2 new strategies regarding its CPU line. First, they will use 0.5 multipliers, resulting in only 100MHz differences between two separate processors. Perhaps this will result in a higher flexibility of the upcoming Athlon X2 (Brisbane) and AMD Sempron (Sparta) lines. And then, there's the idea of separating the cache numbers, with 2x1MB level 2 cache available only for FX models and maybe 6000 ones. Lower models will have to do with 512kB per core from now on.

New 65nm models that will come out on 5 Dec include Athlon 64 X2 4000 , 4400 and 4800 and they integrate 512KB x2 level 2 cache. In addition, they are clocked 100MHz higher than the previous models. The new clock speeds are 2.1GHz, 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz. All of them are in 65W TDP, no more 89W TDP version as a result of using 65nm instead of 90nm process. X2 5000 is the last in line, coming out in the beginning of 2007 with a lower TDP of only 76W.

Good news coming from AMD's boot camp. These new CPUs won't shake the world since they produce the same performance as was recorded when using 90nm parts. And that's not a surprise. INTEL will continue to deliver more performance with its Core 2 Duo CPUs but AMD knows that. And the only thing that it can do to keep selling CPUs is to sell them cheap. Sounds like a nice plan. Let's see if it works.
