We've heard of many memory cards of 64 GB or larger capacities, but they usually come in form factors that don't fit very small mobile gadgets like smartphones. There are exceptions though, like the product that Transcend revealed the other day.

Long story short, Transcend has formally launched a 64GB microSDXC UHS-I memory card, where UHS stands for ultra-high speed.

The company already has a series of UHS-I cards with capacities of 8 GB to 32 GB. This is just an extension of that collection.

“Transcend's Premium Series microSDHC/SDXC UHS-I memory card lineup allows smartphone, tablet, and other portable device users to significantly expand their multimedia storage space,” the company says in its press release.

To help prospective buyers gain perspective, 64 GB is enough to store 10,000 high-resolution JPEG photographs taken at 12 megapixels (average size of 6 MB each).

That is the equivalent of 16 hours of video recorded at 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution (full 9 Mbps H.264).

The reason the card has no trouble recording fast enough is the transfer speed of up to 45 MB/s.

The company may be promoting it as a tablet and smartphone storage solution, but those specifications make them quite good for everything else that uses microSDXC cards, be they even high-end cameras, though full-size SDXC cards are more popular there.

Back to phones and slates, memory-intensive mobile apps will benefit from the speedy storage too.

Of course, customers will have to pay for all these perks: $109 or 85 Euro, according to exchange rates. Then again, the EU price will probably be closer to 109 Euro instead.

“With its impressive combination of high-speed performance and vast storage capacity, the 64GB microSDXC UHS-I memory card will undoubtedly satisfy mobile users for a very long time,” Transcend said.

Long lifespan and good performance that won't become superfluous in a year's time are definitely an advantage.
