The (European) walnut tree (Juglans regia) is native in a region stretching from the Balkans eastward to the Himalayas and southwest China. It is one of the oldest cultivated tree species. It forms a vigorous trunk of 18-25 m (60-83 ft) in height and over 1 m (3.3 m) in diameter. The tree grows slowly in its first years and starts fructifying late. That's why cultivated walnut trees are grafted for an early fructification at small size.

Walnut wood is extremely appreciated for making furniture, due to its hardness, high quality, easy processing and polishing, and its resistance to insect attack. Walnut trees are also decorative due to their large size and dense foliage.

Walnuts mature gradually, from September to October and can be kept up to 1.5 years.

1. The walnuts are a complete aliment, and have a high energetic value: up to 6,500 calories per kilogram. This is due to their high content in polyunsaturated fats. The extracted oil can be comestible but also have technical uses.

2. Walnut consume was found by some researches to prevent the coronary disease. That's because the omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts protect the body from cardiovascular diseases by impeding erratic heart beats, decreasing the likelihood of blood clots formation inside the arteries and improving the ratio of good to bad cholesterol.

3. Because walnuts are rich in iodine, they are considered good for preventing goiter caused by thyroid gland impairment and all hormonal unbalances associated with it.

4. Walnuts have been known to have aphrodisiac qualities ever since Roman times and have been used with this purpose by many Europeans (like French, for example). Wealthy blood circulation is crucial for getting and keeping an erection. Walnuts are also rich in protein and high in potassium, zinc and iron (that's why oysters, too, are consumed as aphrodisiacs). A Malay company even produces a walnut based aphrodisiac called N-Hanz. But the active ingredient of the walnut is believe to be the arginine, an amino acid that is absorbed into the body and transformed into nitric oxide, known to help to enlarge blood vessels and enhance blood flow to the penis. Because walnut-based products are not drugs, they can be safely consumed by those with hypertension or diabetes, or (those) who have recently had heart bypasses.

5. Leaves, shoots and buds are used for achieving a dye with great resistance to discoloring. Green leaves boiled in the water are indicated for toning up to hair, giving a pleasant gloss.

6. The leaf infusion is also used as vermifuge, tonic and for easing the ulcer pains.
