An alleged fifth-generation iPod touch has emerged in photos published on several blogs, sporting a whopping 128GB of storage and an all-capacitive front panel, in what would support rumors of Apple dropping the physical home button on its iOS devices.

Although most likely fake, the images have garnered some attention in the past few hours, prompting us to report on this finding for what it’s worth.

Indeed, Apple has been rumored to plan the elimination of the physical home button on its iOS devices, though there are few indications that this is the case (or even necessary, for that matter).

The 128GB of on-board memory would be less debatable, as the next version of the iPod touch may well double the storage capacity for all models.

In this respect, the fifth-generation iPod touch would start at 32GB as minimum. However, this too is not all that likely, with flash (NAND) storage still priced high.

A good example is the latest MacBook Air, which costs $999 (a lot less than its predecessor), but only because Apple is offering a meager 64GB of solid state goodness.

For a productivity machine - heck, a full fledged computer - there is very little space to store your video, music, pictures, in addition to the OS and the various applications that you might want to install.

But again, we recommend taking this alleged ‘leak’ for what it is, nothing more, nothing less.

According to the imagery reportedly sent to the folks at 9to5mac, the 5G iPod touch unit seems to be running iOS 4.2.1. The metallic back of the device appears unchanged (compared to the current models).

It may be worth noting that, although such leaks are generally characterized by low resolution, smudgy photos, these images are trying a tad too much to be convincing spy shots.
