The race for the biggest LCD TV has a temporary winner. A Taiwan company, Kolin, has introduced a 55-inch LCD-TV model yesterday, claiming it to be the largest LCD TV in the Taiwan market.

The TV is build with panels from LG.Philips LCD. The resolution of this "monster" is a high-definition TV (HDTV) 1920x1080p standard.
According to Kolin president Liu Chi-lei, the model will be produced and marketed in Taiwan this year, but in the second half.

According to Digitimes.com, the Taiwanese market will not
be the only one to enjoy this new piece of technology. The model will be sold also in the US market, where the distribution will be made by Syntax Group, the US partner of Kolin.

Actually the 55-inch LCD TV is not the only product launched by Kolin and during the event held yesterday the company has launched also three smaller LCD TV with a size of 42-inch. These models will be available for sale since April.

The directors of Kolin are hoping that 2005 will be a great year for them in terms of sales. The company expects to ship 300,000 LCD TVs, at all sizes, this year - up more than 200% from last year.

The models launched yesterday are representing, also, the first attempt of Kolin in this segment, the company being known to make 20-, 27-, 30-, 32- and 37-inch LCD TV's.

But they are confident in their success, so another objective of the company is to release a 61-inch TV. Only this time, the model will be based on Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCOS) technology and it is going to be released in the second half of the year.

In LCOS, liquid crystals are applied to a reflective mirror substrate. As the liquid crystals open and close, the light is either reflected from the mirror below, or blocked. This modulates the light and creates the image. LCOS technology is usually very high resolution, and typically higher in price than most LCD and DLP products.
