It's a pittance compared to that 105-inch beast of the previous month

OLED displays are awesome, but they are also very expensive. This has led to an odd dichotomy, where people gawk and sputter at the price tags but still follow the rise and fall of such displays, even if they never buy one. LG has just put its latest OLED TV up for pre-order.

Said TV is the 55-inch 55EC9300 Smart TV which, in addition to featuring high-quality, high-contrast OLED technology, uses a curved panel as well.

That's right, this is a little sibling of that 105-inch monstrosity that LG formally launched back in late July, right around the time when Samsung did the same thing.

The 105-inch curved LG OLED TV was even more unusual than this newest one, as it features a 21:9 aspect ratio, with a resolution of 5120 x 2160 pixels, beyond 4K.

Speaking of resolution, the new LG 55EC9300 sticks to the Full HD image quality, instead of pushing all the way to 4K, so the resolution is of 1920 x 1080 instead 3840 x 2160 pixels.

No wonder it “only” costs $3,500 / €2,624. If it had been equipped with a 4K screen, we might have been looking at a display with ten times that price instead.

Anyway, the newcomer has deeper blacks than LED-backlit LCD TVs, as well as three USB 2.0 ports, four HDMI composite connectors, and includes Wi-Fi, Ethernet, MHL, and Miracast.

Thus, you will not only be able to stream things from cable, a satellite antenna, or set-top box, but also from the Internet or a PC, or from a smartphone or tablet via MHL/Miracast.

There are eight picture modes as well as the same number of aspect ratios (16:9 is the default, but you can select others), Tru Color Generator technology, resolution upscale capability, a 2-channel speaker system (40W audio output, 6 sound modes), and all the programs and widgets you'd expect to find in a smart TV (web browser, Skype, social networking apps, games, LG App Store access, voice recognition, all accessible via the launcher bar).

Finally, you might have guessed by now but we'll confirm it: 3D is supported, as is automatic conversion of 2D films into 3D and vice versa. Dual Play Capability, 3D Image Correction, and 3D Viewpoint Control, plus 3D Depth Control, are provided.

Everything is run by a version of webOS. What remains to be seen is if this LG 55EC9300 Curved OLED Smart TV thing manages to sell for the price we mentioned before.
