A 51-year-old woman from California suffered a shark attack on Saturday, 20 yards (18 meters) off Makena Landing Beach Park in Maui.

Ocean Safety officials were prompted to close down beaches surrounding the location of the attack, from Maluaka Beach to Changs Beach, Maui County spokesman Rod Antone stated.

According to Maui News, the woman had an encounter with a shark described as being 10-12 feet (3-3.6 meters) long, of a yet unidentified species.

She survived the attack with puncture wounds consistent with bite marks on her right inner thigh, as well as minor injuries to her right hand, most likely sustained as she attempted to push the shark away.

The victim was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center and currently finds herself in stable condition, local Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga said.
